Pemberton Farms & Garden Center is a local grocery store with some nice bulk and package free offerings located near Porter Square and Davis Square in Cambridge, MA. It has recently been renovated and now includes a beautiful and growing bulk food section! It’s a great place to shop for produce, bulk olive oil, coffee beans, bulk basics, cleaning products and vegan specialty foods. During the spring and summer months, they also have an outdoor garden center.
Their bulk section is still relatively new, but they have been expanding their selection over the past several months. They are very open to suggestions, requests and ideas for which items to stock. Currently there are baking ingredients, beans, dried fruit, grains/rice, granola, nuts/seeds, pasta, snacks and candy. Pemberton Farms is very welcoming to customers bringing in their own clean containers. If you are unable to tare them at home they can weigh them for you in the store.
Recently they added a beautiful bulk spice section where you can refill your spice jars from home.
There’s a section with bulk coffee beans and grinders nearby. They also have unbleached coffee filters around the corner.
They’ve got liquid laundry and hand soap along with empty pump containers.
They sell beeswax wrap to preserve food or seal containers. Other zero waste items include Hydroflask bottles, Preserve food containers and canning jars.
Their personal hygiene section has castile soap, package-free bars of soap, essential oils, menstrual cups and lotions packaged in tins.
Pemberton Farms even carries natural hygiene products for your pets!
They offer local honey and maple syrup in glass containers.
There’s a nice olive and antipasto bar near the cheese counter where you can buy cheese wrapped in wax paper instead of plastic.
They’ve got a beautiful produce section with mostly package-free fruits and vegetables (including celery, lettuce and carrots).
They have a few bulk liquids on tap including olive oil, balsamic vinegar and garlic oil. There are refillable glass containers that you can bring back for refills.
They sell local milk in returnable/refillable glass bottles.
There’s a great selection of vegan foods, like this Miyoko’s Creamery vegan “cheese” and veggie burgers/dogs.
They have a little baked goods section with package-free bread and rolls.
They’ve expanded their tap section to include multiple kombucha flavors and nitro cold brew coffee since the last time I posted.
They also have reusable mugs that you can borrow and bring back, like a library system if you forgot your own reusable coffee cup! If you decide you want to keep a mug there’s a donation jar to help support the program to ensure there’s always mugs available for other customers.
Pemberton Farms also has a deli and hot foods section, although I’m not sure if they allow customers to bring in their own containers at these stations.
